Teacher Bob’s Top 7 Math Tips

As a teacher, I often get asked for my top tips on how to improve my students' math skills. And while there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, I do have some advice that can help. Here are my top 7 tips for improving your young learner's math skills:

Believe In Yourself

If you keep telling yourself that you're just no good or not a math person, you'll never improve. It’s sort of like a self-fulfilling prophecy. But if you believe that you can get better at math with practice, you'll be well on your way to success. So, think positive and believe in yourself - you can do it!

Get a Good Grasp Of the Basics

Any good coach will tell you that fundamentals should come first. If you want to improve your math skills, you need to start with the basics. Make sure you understand the fundamental concepts before moving on to more difficult material. This would include things such as math facts and simple operations with numbers. I would also include catching up on other missed concepts, too.

Learn From Your Mistakes

It's been said that we learn more from our mistakes than our successes. And while that may be true, it's not always easy to learn from our mistakes. We often beat ourselves up over them or try to forget they ever happened. But if we can learn to accept our mistakes and view them as learning opportunities, we can use them to our advantage. To this end, I always tell my math students to show their work in order to look back on mistakes to find out where they went wrong.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions About Math

Math can be a tough subject for a lot of people, so you’re not alone. If you're having trouble understanding something, don't be afraid to ask questions. There's no shame in admitting that you need help. Your teacher is there to help you, and they'll be more than happy to answer your questions. And besides, more than likely, someone else will benefit from your question.

Practice, Practice, Practice

One of the best ways to improve your math skills is to simply practice as much as you can. Doing lots of problems will help you to better understand the material and will also help you to develop important problem-solving skills.

Take Your Time and Do Your Best

It can be easy to make mistakes when you're working through a problem, especially if you're in a hurry. But if you take the time to check each answer as you go, you can avoid making mistakes that could cost you time and energy later. I’ve seen it time and time again. The first student to finish their work isn’t always right or gets the best marks.
